JAT: restructure or bankruptcy

BELGRADE -- Wednesday – Serbia’s national airline, JAT Airways, is closer to restructuring than bankruptcy, Labour Minister Slobodan Lalovic said today.

However, Lalovic told company employees today, the anarchy in the company must come to an end before progress can be made.

Speaking at a meeting with JAT staff, the minister said that the anarchy ruling the company is more responsible for threats of bankruptcy rather than economic reasons. If agreement can be reached by Thursday morning on bringing the anarchy in the company to an end, the threat of bankruptcy could be averted, he said.

Please JAT waits till we went to Beograd and back to Berlin. ;-)

…the anarchy ruling the company is more responsible for threats of bankruptcy rather than economic reasons. I don’t think so. No one will pay 300 € for a flight from Berlin to Beograd and back. Even you can go with easyjet for 100 €.

Mechanics announce another strike

JAT airways aeromechanics union representative, Dragan Bogdanovic, said that the workers will once again be on strike, as of tomorrow.

He said that the union has not received a positive answer on its demands, and firstly on the question of why they have not been paid for the month of November still, while the administration has increased its wages by 50 percent.

Bogdanovic said that the strikes will cause a reduction in the number of national flights taking off from the Belgrade airport.

...Don't be silly! I'll fly to Beograd soon!!!

JAT engineers to review strike today

BELGRADE -- Monday – Aircraft mechanics at national air carrier JAT Airways are meeting today to review strike plans.

Union leader Dragan Bogdanovic said this morning that this is the last attempt to resolve the problem.

“JAT mechanics have not for one moment sought a pay increase, we are seeking only payment of the money honestly earned, but the only group in JAT which has not received pay are mechanics and aircraft engineers, while the management have even increased their own pay,” he said.

Bogdanovic told media that a solution was being sought with the people authorised, adding that none of the strikers would return to work if anyone on strike is sacked, and that once the strike is begun, the whole technical division of JAT would stand behind it.

He also noted that, from the beginning of this year, JAT mechanics had earned half a million dollars for the company in outside jobs, after a total of five million dollars for similar work last year.

Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic said he would meet JAT union leaders today and added that the government is presenting a plan to resolve the crisis in the company.

“If the union doesn’t accept the plan, JAT will be put into receivership,” said Dinkic.

The JAT mechanics are demanding immediate payment of wages for the past three months and implementation of the company’s new individual collective agreement.

Flights taking off, but not many

BELGRADE -- Monday – JAT airways aeromechanics are still striking, forcing JAT to significantly cut down on the number of flights taking of from the Belgrade airport, and having to rent aircrafts to keep business going.

Flights will take off today for Paris, Moscow, London, Zurich and Frankfurt, according to JAT representatives, who say that flight schedules will be returning back to normal today, but in a lessened volume.

Engineers join strike
The JAT aero-engineers have joined the mechanics strike, demanding of General Director Nebojsa Starcevic to implement the measure recommended by the Serbian government, and replace the entire administration which is responsible for the current crisis which the airline is in, according to union President Igor Sarenac.

Government threatens firings
According to the Serbian government, the aeromechanics are in the middle of an illegal strike. The government has called on all those who are striking to return to their jobs tomorrow. Those who do not, will be fired.

According to government officials, the strike goes against minimum work process regulations in public companies which are set by law. Aeromechanic union President Dragan Bogdanovic said that the government is trying to play games with the union, and test their nerves.

The union of aeromechanics is asking for increased wages and, as they say, real changes in the company’s management. The union says that since the Serbian government implemented the temporary administration, there has only been a swapping of positions and no new restructuring of the company. The aero-engineers agree, although, they do admit that the strike is not a legal one.

If the 600 aeromechanics continue their strike tomorrow, the Serbian government plans on firing them all and will be accepting applications for mechanics who wish to fill the positions, only this time around, they will be hiring only half that number of workers.
