BELGRADE -- 798 people died in traffic accidents in Serbia in 2009 – 99 less than in the previous year.

According to Serbian police (MUP) data, 897 people died in car accidents in Serbia in 2008, not including Kosovo, while the number of deaths was 968 in 2007.

About 21,500 people were injured in traffic accidents in 2009, which is also less than the previous year, when the number stood at 22,275.

There were about 64,800 car accidents in 2009, or 4.2 percent less compared to 67,708 the year before.

The number of accidents has been reduced by 8.35 percent in the past two years, while the number of fatalities dropped by 17.5 percent, MUP said.

A decade after Croatia sued Serbia in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Belgrade is ready to lodge a countersuit, alleging that Croatian authorities committed crimes against Serb population in 1991/95, Serbian broadcaster B92 said on December 31 2009.

B92 quoted a Serbian government media statement, saying that the decision was made after consultations held by president Boris Tadić and prime minister Mirko Cvetković.

The statement said that Serbia made the decision because Croatia filed on July 2 1999 a suit with the ICJ against what was then the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia "on account of the violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide during armed conflicts on Croatian territory in the period 1991–1995."
